Vulnerability Assessment
Introduction
Vulnerability assessment is a technique used in an organization to check the effectiveness of IT Security Controls, and help identify the security gaps in the IT infrastructure, which includes Endpoints, Network Devices, and Applications.
Regular assessments are needed whenever a new service, application feature, or update is allowed or added. Regular assessments ensure the organization is aware of the security flaws, enabling the organization to patch these flaws, so exploitation by outsiders or hackers may be prevented. A Vulnerability Assessment (VA) Report helps identify and underscores an organization´s critical vulnerabilities, and security posture or risk level.
Why the need for a Vulnerability Assessment Program?
An organization needs to conduct VA every quarter to reduce, if not at all avoid, the risk from vulnerabilities. Exploiting vulnerabilities allows an outsider or hacker to get into the organization´s network and steal data.
Threats evolve as much daily as the new applications, systems, and network upgrades, or additions of new features that may bring new critical vulnerabilities. Breaches brought about by outsiders or hackers´ exploitation of these vulnerabilities may lead to financial losses and damage to a business´ reputation among others. It is, thus, imperative for an organization to reduce, if not avoid, security threats and vulnerabilities.
